Jarrod Marks, MD

Dr. Jarrod A. Marks is a founding partner of Empire State Psychiatry. Dr. Marks is widely regarded as a nationally recognized expert in bipolar disorder, psychodynamic therapy, forensic psychiatry, and psychiatric education. He is board-certified in both general and forensic psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and holds fellowship training in forensic psychiatry from SUNY Upstate Medical University. Known for his deep experience diagnosing and treating complex mood disorders—including bipolar disorder and schizoaffective presentations—Dr. Marks frequently provides expert consultations for difficult diagnostic clarifications and therapeutic management.

His therapeutic approach is rooted in a combination of biological understanding and psychodynamic psychotherapy, emphasizing patient-centered work that explores unconscious dynamics, emotional conflicts, and past relational patterns—helping individuals gain insight into symptoms often arising from deeper layers of psychic activity. In addition to clinical care, he contributes actively to forensic psychiatry, performing evaluations such as independent medical assessments, fitness‑for‑duty reviews, and disability consultations in legal and agency contexts.

Dr. Marks serves as Clinical Assistant Professor at SUNY Upstate Medical University and has served as course director for psychodynamic seminars, affirming his reputation for excellence in both clinical instruction and scholarly engagement. Through publications in journals such as Psychiatric Times, Academic Psychiatry, The APA FOCUS Journal, and presentations at leading venues—including the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law—he continues to advance dialogue at the intersection of mood disorders, psychotherapy, and forensic evaluation.

Dr. Marks graduated from Stanford University with an individually designed major in Jewish Studies. He was accepted as a sophomore in college to The Mount Sinai School of Medicine through the Humanities and Medicine Program. After graduating medical school, Dr. Marks completed a residency in psychiatry at Tufts Medical Center in Boston, where he trained with national leaders in mood disorders, advanced psychopharmacology, and psychoanalytic psychotherapy. Dr. Marks culminated his graduate medical education by completing a fellowship in forensic psychiatry at SUNY Upstate.

At Empire State Psychiatry, Dr. Marks is dedicated to maintaining both clinical and operational excellence. He actively recruits the highest quality providers, participates in teaching and case supervision, and supports the ongoing development of high-quality patient care.
